Each and every day, I must make a decision about what to lead with for Wide World of News.
And I have to decide having written ZERO words the night before (I don’t start each edition until the morning) and without drinking any coffee (I don’t touch the stuff).
I am sometimes asked, “How do you do this every day?”
The answer is:
It is rare that I am stumped for how to start.
Today, however, is such a day.
So many choices and/but also the media seems to be getting an early jump on the long weekend, because, truly, there is not a lot of clarity in this cycle.
Among the choices I could begin with:
1. The Supreme Court’s ruling on the EPA’s power, which some commentators have para-hyperbolically called bigger than the abortion decision.
2. President Biden’s call to scrap the Senate filibuster to address privacy issues.
3. The absolute confusion on whether Russia is losing or winning.
4. The latest round of negative economic data, including consumer behavior and (lack of) confidence.
5. The Washington Post, New York Times, and Politico looks at alleged and obvious efforts by Team Trump to intimidate, threaten, and buy off 1/6 witnesses.
6. The Dominant Media’s continue attempts to demonstrate that the 1/6 hearings have “changed everything” regarding Trump ’24, including this AP story with this mega MAGA nugget:
Trump’s fundraising has fallen off dramatically over the last two months. He reported raising just over $19,000 in May and June combined after taking in nearly $9 million in March and April.
7. This staggering new Yahoo News/YouGov poll that reinforces the current paradoxical madness: Trump is weaker than he was before in the context of the Republican nomination battle (but mostly only as compared to DeSantis); however, Biden is weaker with Democrats in the nomination context than Trump is with Republicans; however, Biden is stronger than Trump in a hypothetical rematch.
8. The Odessa missile attacks.
9. Peggy Noonan’s glorifications of Cassidy Hutchinson and Liz Cheney.
10. The travel mess that is the United States.
11.
12. The various court rulings on abortion.
13. Rob Finnerty getting Donald Trump to acknowledge that there is more to 2024 than denying the results of the 2020 election.
14. Ron Brownstein raising all sorts of questions about Joe Biden’s leadership moment and capacities.
15.
But the correct answer is:.
Good luck at the airport!
