ESSENTIAL READING/VIEWING
Tuesday’s 2WAY session featuring Newt Gingrich, Joe Scarborough, Doug Sosnik, Lauren Leader, Pat McCrory, and other members of the 2WAY community was the one of the best conversations I have heard about the state of the presidential race and the road ahead.
I strongly recommend you watch it all – and share the video with others:
Here is Doug Sosnik’s latest take on the contest:
The 2024 presidential election was transformed when Kamala Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee. The Democratic party is now unified and energized. In the week following her entry into the race, Harris raised over $200 million dollars – 66% of which were first time contributions – and signed up over 360,000 new volunteers.
In addition to consolidating the Democratic base, Harris has picked up considerable support from young and non-white voters while at the same time narrowing the partisan enthusiasm gap about voting in the upcoming election.
While it is too early to draw any firm conclusions, polling has shown Harris in a much closer race than when Biden was at the top of the ticket. Nevertheless, the electoral college still favors Trump as he currently has many more paths than Harris to the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the election.
What is clear is that there will be a record gender gap in voting in this year’s presidential election. This will be the first presidential election since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In addition, the historic significance of Harris running for president coupled with Donald Trump’s testosterone-fueled candidacy and his selection of J.D. Vance as his running mate will push women voters into the arms of the Democrats.
Harris has thus far exceeded expectations as a candidate but she is about to be put to the test on whether she can withstand the rigors of a presidential campaign. She is not well defined for a majority of the country despite having served as vice president for the past three and a half years, The real battle starts now to see whether the Democrats or the Republicans are able to define Harris first. This is why the next three weeks could be decisive in determining the outcome of the presidential election.
During this critical period, Harris has several opportunities to reintroduce herself and establish her narrative with the American public. She is expected to announce her running mate selection by August 7th. Following that announcement, she will have the opportunity to frame the election on her terms when the Democratic National Convention is held in Chicago beginning on August 19th.
In the meantime, the Trump campaign is running $12 million dollars in advertising in six swing states this week, framing Harris as “failed, weak and dangerously liberal.”
As these developments settle into the public consciousness, we should, by the end of August, have a much better handle on the state of the race, where the electoral college stands and which battleground states will determine the outcome of the election.
It is essential to remember that a majority of the country will likely have voted before election day on November 5th, with early voting starting in Pennsylvania on September 16th. That is one of the reasons that the next three weeks are so crucial in determining the outcome of the 2024 election.
